Until recently, I didn't HAVE a savings account. But, I want to go on vacation, possibly to Hawaii, I have income taxes that kill me every year, and I have work that needs to be done in the house I am living in. Without saving, I am not going to accomplish any of these. So here is what I have been doing in 2015:
Every five dollar bill and coin that ends up in my wallet, goes into the bank. I still use cash when possible, so always have change and occasionally a fiver. I like playing scratch off lotto tickets. If I have a stray one dollar bill burning a hole in my pocket, I will buy a scratch off. All winnings go into my savings account. So far, I have won more than I have spent, so it is working.....for now. I am a widow on a pension. I have to stretch that paycheck through the month. I have been shopping via coupons, groupon, amazon, where ever a bargain is to be had. I have also downloaded various shopping apps and use them for rebates. When I hit an amount I can redeem, it goes into my savings account. With bargains and careful shopping, I manage to still have money in my checking account at the end of the month. That money transfers into my savings account, be it $20 or $200. Then I start the month of saving all over again. I am maxed out on credit cards thanks to a big move across country, and being unemployed for too long. I have worked out a budget, and trying hard to stick to it. I am paying monthly minimums on my smaller interest cards and paying extra on the higher interest card. When that is paid off, I will work on the next highest. I want these bills to go away. I see a light at the end of the tunnel. I am always looking for ways to save and earn, so any ideas left in the comments section would be great.
