Until recently, I didn't HAVE a savings account. But, I want to go on vacation, possibly to Hawaii, I have income taxes that kill me every year, and I have work that needs to be done in the house I am living in. Without saving, I am not going to accomplish any of these. So here is what I have been doing in 2015:
Every five dollar bill and coin that ends up in my wallet, goes into the bank. I still use cash when possible, so always have change and occasionally a fiver. I like playing scratch off lotto tickets. If I have a stray one dollar bill burning a hole in my pocket, I will buy a scratch off. All winnings go into my savings account. So far, I have won more than I have spent, so it is working.....for now. I am a widow on a pension. I have to stretch that paycheck through the month. I have been shopping via coupons, groupon, amazon, where ever a bargain is to be had. I have also downloaded various shopping apps and use them for rebates. When I hit an amount I can redeem, it goes into my savings account. With bargains and careful shopping, I manage to still have money in my checking account at the end of the month. That money transfers into my savings account, be it $20 or $200. Then I start the month of saving all over again. I am maxed out on credit cards thanks to a big move across country, and being unemployed for too long. I have worked out a budget, and trying hard to stick to it. I am paying monthly minimums on my smaller interest cards and paying extra on the higher interest card. When that is paid off, I will work on the next highest. I want these bills to go away. I see a light at the end of the tunnel. I am always looking for ways to save and earn, so any ideas left in the comments section would be great. I love the ease of Swiffer. I am not a lover of housework so the easier the better. I had Swiffers for a few years but it wasn't very thrifty. So I went back to the conventional mops. I just never felt my floors were as clean as I wished them to be.
That is when I discovered Reveal. Unlike the Swiffer wet mop, the bottle can be refilled, using your favorite cleaning solution. The pads are washable and reusable. I make my own cleaning solution using borax, vinegar, and Dawn. It is fresh smelling. I don't like all the chemical smells of store bought cleaners. It is also very inexpensive, so my checking account like its. Disclaimer: I am not paid by Rubbermaid to endorse this product. I REALLY like it! I signed up with Groupon years ago, but never paid attention to it. After we opened our indoor mini golf business (Putter-a-Round in Harrisonburg, Virginia), we had to find free and inexpensive ways to advertise. My business partner checked into Groupon. Our small business was able to sign up to give discounts. It amazed me how many people actually found us on the site and downloaded their coupon to come play.
Now I look at Groupon all the time for gift shopping and coupons for activities for any town I visit. Locally, there are coupons for restaurants and museums and more. A bonus that Groupon offers is the Snap program. I get rebates for grocery shopping! If you don't have an account, check it out https://www.groupon.com/visitor_referral/h/1aa94b33-d8cd-40fa-b697-4dd697eb30f8 I found another site that offers points for shopping. If you buy Kellogg's products, which include Pringles, Keeblers, Morning Star, and more, you might has well be getting something back for your purchase. Points can be redeemed for free goodies such as books, kitchenware, gift cards, etc.
https://www.kelloggsfamilyrewards.com Here is one more site to build a little online bank account. If you do online shopping at Walmart.com, Groupon, Amazon, get some of that money back by using Ebates. Again, there is money in referrals, so thank you for using my link :)
http://www.ebates.com/rf.do?referrerid=5Re5GsvnzLEGqdBeKT0WOg%3D%3D&eeid=26471 Back in the day, I saved all my labels, box tops, packaging, and then I scouted in newspapers, on grocery store coupons walls, etc looking for rebate forms. I would get books and cute little toys for my daughter, free products, and on occasion a little check in the mail It was a rough hobby, and not very neat. I had a closet full of "trash", just waiting for the right rebate form. I haven't been able to find rebate forms for years.
After adding a smart phone to my life arsenal, I have discovered apps such as Checkout 51, Snap by Groupon, and Saving Star. I have small accounts with all of them, but I find I don't use many of the products they offer rebates on, or I have to buy multiples, which I don't do much of. The other day I was introduced to Ibotta. I love it! It offers more rebate items than the other sites, and more generics. Yesterday I went out for 3 items. Beer, dog food, and milk. I never can decide what beer I want but Blue Moon had a nice rebate, so that was my choice of the day. I was able to get a small rebate back by buying a bag of dog food of my choice as well as a gallon of milk. I have $3.70 in my account just on one small shopping trip. Add coupons, store frequent shopper cards, and sales, this will be a great way for me to save money on my shopping trips. You can check it out using this link. (yes, you make money on referrals also) https://ibotta.com/r/qsugvxx What a great way to earn points for doing all the things you normally do online anyway. You can earn points for watching videos, playing games, doing polls, shopping, searching, and more. With the points that you earn, you can buy into sweepstakes or redeem for gift cards. With work, these points can grow quickly. Can you say "free Christmas gifts"?
http://www.swagbucks.com/refer/cotightwad At the end of the month, do you look at your checkbook and wonder what you spent all your money on? You go through all your shopping trips and realize you have nickle and dimed your account to zero. There is a site called mint.com that can track your shopping habits and shows you what you had spent your hard earned money on. You can link your bank accounts and credit cards and it will give you a break down what went to food, entertainment, utilities, etc. Once you see your habits, you will be able to budget and adjust. It is a great tool for getting your spending under control.
